My Yellow Flare Skirt (Summer 2005)

Inspiration:

The Spring-Summer of 2005 was filled with a obsessive desire to make some cute clothing with a retro flare for everyday wear. My desire for chic clothes has grown enormously and when I saw this pattern I knew I HAD to make a skirt from it. 50s circle skirts have been my latest passion, so this was perfect!

Two glorious examples of fluffy fifties' skirts from Christine's Costume Page. While neither of these images directly inspired my skirt I like to look at the similarities.

Materials:

McCalls 4875, some light yellow sheer fabric with faint white flowers on it that I had in my stash, hooks and eyes, thread.

Construction:

The pattern called for 3 and something yards of fabric for 45" fabric, but when I laid it out on the fold the way it instructed me the pattern piece went way off the fabric! Thankfully I had much more fabric than the pattern required and was able to cut it out without it being on the fold. Unfortunately, this made seams up the front and back of the skirt as well as the sides. Thankfully, this wasn't to big of a deal and actually helped when I needed to take the skirt in a bit.

The skirt went together very well and I highly recommend this pattern. But make sure you double you're fabric or you won't have enough! You may also need to put hook and eyes on the sides slits to keep them from opening (like I did).

I lengthened the skirt by 4 inches and took up one inch in the hem. I also ended up making a full muslin petticoat to go underneath because my modern slips felt too limp!

The Finished Skirt:

I absolutely LOVE this skirt! It feels so feminine and beautiful!
