My Sewing Room

Welcome to my sewing room! This is the place where I do all of my sewing. I am very blessed to have a special room in the basement dedicated entirely to sewing, complete with shelves and room for my table and the ironing board! Hooray! :)

I'll take you on a little tour. Down in the back room of the basement of our large house you will find my roomy, warm, and homey sewing room (it smells like fabric and thread :). It's a pretty nice place to work but does have a few drawbacks.

1. We try not to turn the heat on in that basement. Therefore, it is freezing in the winter. Thankfully, it is cool in the summer.

2. The rug is a wonderful color for loosing pins in. I have been forced to make a habit of always picking up a pin the instant I know I've dropped it.

3. It is very quiet down there, which is nice when you have 10 other people in the house, but you also can't always hear your name being called, and therefore: trouble comes. Not to mention that the silence can get creepy after a few hours of sewing and I start to wonder whether I'm alive or not (that's when Josh Groban comes in handy *grin*).

4. I still have not decided what theme I'm going to do the room in. Will I ever? :)

Anyway, here are two views of my sewing room. These were taken in 2003, so as I'm sure you've guessed, the room has evolved a lot since then, but they should give you a pretty good idea of where I sew. My sewing machine has such a personality that I've named her Sabrina :)

This here is my wonderful wardrobe where I keep all my costumes (and a couple winter coats that have no place in the house :)! It was given to us by my great Uncle Dutchy when he moved house. It's a great blessing to me as all of my costumes were getting rather crushed in my bedroom closet. It also has a nice shelf on top wear I keep my bonnets, ribbons, and other smaller dainties. I can even keep my hoopskirt hidden in the back!

Here is my new best friend! Her name is Maire (pronounced moya) and she's indespensible when it comes to fitting costumes. She was my 16th birthday present but didn't arrive until nearly 6 months later (this was not due to that company's fault, we just didn't get around to ordering her till then :).

We bought Maire from Sew True and she's absolutely wonderful. Although, I'm warning you, do not buy one of these Uniquely You dressforms unless you have a lot of patience and are looking forward to a big challenge.

My sister Rebekah and I spent 5 hours fitting the sheath. Then when it came time to stuff her in we nearly wripped the seams trying to stuff it and zip it up. I then went into hysterics and the project was put on hold a few days until I could get my senses back.

We ended up taking Maire back out of sheath because I had messed up one of the instructions, and then we had my Pa to help get her back in. He did it awesome (I could never have got through this project without my level headed, strong, and very smart Dad). He got Maire back into the sheath and now she's totally perfect - and exactly my measurements! I'm looking forward to our future sewing endeavors!

Recently (November 2005) our family bought a new machine, a Husqvarna Viking Platinum 770. I absolutely love it and feel so blessed to be able to have this new machine. She still needs a name, any ideas? :)

Here's a couple pictures of me watching the instructional video and figuring out how the machine works. Fun!

Anyway, that's a brief tour of my sewing room! Stop by sometime and see it in person!

P.S. I've included some sewing related entertainment from fellow members of the Sensibility board HERE. Enjoy!!! :)
