My Blue "Ribboned" Skirt (Spring 2006)

Inspiration:

Lately I've been trying to sew more clothes that match with other things in my wardrobe, rather than just making something cause I like it and having nothing to wear it with afterwards. So this skirt rose out of sheer necessity. I have so many pretty tops that match with very few skirts - I figured I'd get a lot of use out of this.

Materials:

Butterick 4742, blue cotton fabric, brown flowered ribbon, zipper.

Construction:

I absolutely butchered the pattern on this project. First of all, I bought too large of a size, so I had to spend waste tons of time figuring out how to make it smaller. Then I decided not to make it a full circle, which would have been fine if my fabric had been a little wider, but it ended up being too small for my hips (I didn't even realize how small until it was almost done). To fix that problem, I had to totally remove the waistband, take off some of the narrow top of the skirt (good thing I had allowed for a big hem!) and re-do the zipper. So the waist has no band or facing; I just reinforced it a million times with stitching. It was a nightmare. I won't try that again! :)

Besides my stupidity, the skirt went together well, and I'm sure that if you bought the right size pattern and followed the directions, you'd be fine. :)

The Finished Skirt:

Despite the messed up waistband, I really love this skirt! It's so cute and comfy (and it does match well with lots of stuff)!
