Joann Fabrics Teaching Samples

One way I promote the classes I teach at the Joann Fabrics is by making samples of the project to catch people's eye and spark their interest. When I first began making samples, I tried whipping something up fast out of whatever I had on hand, but I am now having a lot more fun putting some thought into these display pieces. I also try and keep in mind what I may want to use them for in the future, as I may take my sample home when the class has finished running (usually the season to wear the garment is then over, but it's a nice to "have" to make yourself something new, even if you can only look at it while it hangs in the store for 3 months :).

Skirt a Season - Winter 08

I made this sample to promote the new Trendy Skirt class I developed for Joann's. I used Simplicity pattern 4091, which I absolutely LOVED and plan to make up again soon. I also highly recommend finishing the top of nearly any modern skirt the way this pattern suggests. It is so much simpler than a facing (annoying!) and looks much prettier. After discovering how to put in a side zipper perfectly this summer, I was relieved to test my theory again with equal success. Ask me for the details later... :)

Please forgive the model shots (trust me, you ain't seen nothin'! ;) - I was just so in love with my new 1930s-ish hat (and the blouse my aunt Cari got me from Tallulah Rose - located in Nashua, NH! :).

Blouse - Summer 07

This blouse was the new project featured in "Sewing Level II" and I used Simplicity pattern 4180. Although the pattern is very straightforward, I made things tough for myself by choosing an insanely slippery material. Hemming the bottom of the bias cut blouse was so frustrating. But I think it came out pretty cute in the end. :)

For some reason this blouse looked a bit large on me, so my sis Lydia most kindly did the modeling job. :)

Vest - Winter 07

I made this vest for my "Sewing Level II" class using Simplicity pattern 4079. This was a very simple project to put together and I highly recommend this pattern as an easy to follow and wonderfully fitting design. My sister Rebekah has also used this pattern with equally fantastic results. This was the first sample I made for Joann's and I think everyone was appalled by how tiny it was (hopefully it didn't turn off people who were more, um... substantial ;).
