My Blue "Ribboned" Gauchos (Summer 2006)

Inspiration:

This past winter and summer I've been wearing a lot more pants than usual. In general I love a totally chic skirt/shirt ensemble, but sometimes I just don't feel like ironing and want something comfy. I've absolutely fallen in love with all the adorable gauchos that have been everywhere this summer and so I really wanted to make some. I'd actually really rather buy them, but they're always made out of that stretchy knit fabric that clings like crazy and makes them look immodest from the back. So I figured the only way to get some modest gauchos was to do it myself (wow, am I smart or what? :).

Materials:

Simplicity 4237, blue cotton fabric, interfacing, ribbon, zipper.

Construction:

These pants went together really well and fit absolutely perfectly. I highly recommend this pattern. It makes up easily, goes pretty fast and easy and the results are very pleasing. These gauchos are the most cool and comfortable pair of pants I own.

This was a great project for brushing up my finishing techniques. The entire interior is french seamed and I feel really good about the way it came out. I think I hemmed them up about 4 or 5 inches, as the cool factor was really what I wanted.

Altogether, I have zero complaints, except that I probably should have taken the wire out of the ribbon before sewing it on. Unlike on my skirt, it pokes out, is scratchy, and took me quite a while to get it all pulled out. Oh well... :)

The Finished Gauchos:

These pictures were taken up in Arichat, Nova Scotia (which is on a tiny island off the coast of Cape Breton). The house was built by my great great grandfather and so the pictures were mostly taken to show off the awesome house details (sorry! :). The first one is taken in the middle of the incredibly tiled hall that runs through the downstairs. The second is in the dining room looking out at the water (sorry the quality is bad - the picture was dark and needed major altering). The third picture was taken on the gorgeous staircase (in the tiled hall) and the fourth was taken in the empty upstairs room that I am determined to believe is haunted by the house ghost. :)
