| Steve Martin's new novel The Pleasure of My Company was surprizingly good. It reminded me a lot of Toole's hilarious A Confederacy of Dunces. Not many books make me laugh out loud. This one did. Steve Martin is an artful word smith. As a pastor, I should note that this is a book for adults. It's not filled with erotic language and scenes like some books--I had to shelf Neil Gaiman's American Gods after 2 or 3 chapters even though it is an award-winning Scifi novel. Even so, The Pleasure of My Company has a few brief rude incidents. The bulk of the story is funny, tragic, and so very 21st century American. And the ending is quite satisfying. |
