Leadership

As usual, Peggy Noonan is right. It is amazing how fragile our society really is. Just what is the glue that holds everyone together? Pundits on the TV like to talk about how Americans are all basically good and how we come together in emergencies to help one another. But most emergencies - tornadoes, local floods, even earthquakes - are typically so very local that the frabric of the community itself does not come unravelled. With something like Katrina we see what happens when all external restraints are removed.

Of course, many people live peacably with others in their community not merely because of the police; rather, they love and serve others as they have learned in church. Yes, church. The prevelance of the Christian faith has been the cement that holds our communites together. So when there's a tragedy and people need help, people who have been trained by the Christian Faith are there.

But those that have not been trained in the faith or have only embraced it for selfish reasons show their true colors when the external restraints are removed. Unfortunately, times like this do not afford any opportunity for educating such people or even any time for mercy. Truth be told, they must be physically restrained with a strong show of power, and often they must just be shot.
