Giambi's Cowardice

While riding the recumbent exercise bike this afternoon at the Comfort Inn in Dover, NH, I watched the press conference with Jason Giambi on Fox News. What an embarrassment. When he was asked if he had taken steroids he said that he really couldn't say because of certain legal issues. Giambi and agent Arn Tellem said legal issues were the reason he couldn't go into details (read: tell the truth). He said he was sorry, but never really specified what he was sorry for. He said that he hoped everything would turn out "positive," but did not specify the negative. He said he felt like he let down the fans. But didn't say for what!

Now as far as I know there's no lawsuit pending against Giambi. He's not in the middle of court case that would keep him from talking. There's no gag order. So what's the deal? What are these "legal issues" that he says keep him from talking? Why didn't some sharp reporter ask him what legal issues kept him from answering the question? "So are you saying that if you confess to having used steroids there will be legal consequences?" Well, duh. But this "legal issues" excuse seems to have become a popular ruse. Most people when they hear this will think that Giambi is involved in some court case and he's not allowed to talk about it. But what he really means is that if he tells the truth, charges will be brought against him and he will face serious legal consequences. So the real reason he doesn't tell the truth in the press conference is because he's a coward. He's afraid of the consequences, so he deceives his listeners into thinking there's some legal reason for his tiptoeing around the truth.
