Over half of deer season is past, and nothing. I haven't even seen more than a couple deer during rifle season. It's been too warm. And I've just not been very lucky. I've not been in the right place at the right time.
You would think that sitting in a deer stand for hours would give one time to think. Not really. One's concentration is on the woods all around, looking and listening for deersign. A couple hours can go by in a flash. No time to read. What a bummer. If only I could do both at the same time. Well, there's always heaven.
I slept in the cabin last night by myself. Normally there's someone there to converse with. Not last night. It was lonely. I sat out on the porch overlooking the lake for hours reading Gene Wolfe's The Wizard. But it was eerie in the extreme. There was no wind at all. The lake is big enough that one cannot see the other side in the dark. Twice last night I heard something very large "crash" into the lake and thrash around. It must of been deer. But it was kind of scary. Just a little, of course.
I also followed the baying and howling of a pack of coyote for at least an hour. They started out pretty far away. When they were a little closer they raised a ruckus at a nearby farm. When coyote are stirred up they yelp like banshees. They ended up right across the lake. I couldn't see them, but when they started their wild yelping that close I jumped out of my rocker and shot for the door. I wasn't gonna be like those dumb people in the movies who just sit there and get what they deserve. I was actually hoping they would come around the lake so I could get a clear shot. Yes, coyote are legal all year. |
