The current controversy over the meaning of the pre-lapsarian Adamic covenant is frustrating. There appears to be little appreciation for that fact that the Reformed tradition does not march lockstep behind those who insist on a meritorious covenant of works. Prof. Joel Garver has a very helpful essay on this called The Covenant of Works in the Reformed Tradition. This is must reading for anyone who has an interest in the current controversy. According to Joel, the essay is still being perfected, but even in draft form it is indispensible.
Joel also posted a little note about this on his blog called Merit and Obedience. His conclusion is that "to maintain that Adam's reward would have been by merit, had he obeyed under the original covenant, is contrary to the teaching of the Westminster Standards." |
