Cosmic World Model

In my sermon last Sunday on Isaiah 11 I suggested that we might add lions, leopards, and bears to our manger scenes this Christmas. More than this, we ought to add a caged serpent and place it right under the baby Jesus. After all, the "little child" referenced in Isa. 11:6c and 8 is surely the same messianic child prophesied in Isa. 7:14 and 9:6-7.

Well, I should've guessed that I'd be getting some special Christmas gifts this week. Sure enough, a stuffed Lion and a bear arrived for my manger scene. A large snake, too. The snake is about 10 times the size of the infant Jesus. Hmm. I just laid out the snake in front of the scene and set the baby Jesus in his trough on top of the serpent's head. That should do it.
The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
and a little child shall lead them.

The cow and the bear shall graze;
their young shall lie down together;
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
and the weaned child shall put his hand over the serpent's den”
(Is. 11:6-8).
