The Passover was celebrated by everyone that crossed the Red Sea, adults and little children. Everyone ate of the memorial sacrifice. Everyone. Similarly, the Lord's Supper is food for the entire family of God, the whole body of Christ, not just adults. Jesus wants his little ones to sit at the Table with him and enjoy the family meal with everyone else. If baptized children are indeed members of the body of Christ, and "we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread," then they ought to eat, too. If they don't, then the communion bread doesn't symbolize the entire body of Christ. The trend to restore children to the Lord's Table has been called paedocommunion, but in fact it's about the whole of the people of God eating at the Lord's Table.
Take the time to listen to Dr. Robert S. Rayburn's explanation in his July 19th evening sermon. This is good stuff.
