I've been traveling so much lately that I needed to "make it up" to my wife. Yesterday we had a very enjoyable Valentines day. I didn't pick up a book or even think about anything related to church, theology, or the Bible. Well, of course, I did pray and keep God's commandments. But I didn't work. The only personal, selfish thing I did was stop by the St. Louis Co. Police department in Clayton to pick up a handgun permit. But we were already heading in that direction anyway.
We went up toward Clayton and the Galleria to shop for jewelry. I knew that would make Chris happy.
"What do you want to get," I asked.
"How much do you want to spend?" she asked.
"It makes a difference, huh? Okay. You can have between $xxx and xxx. How's that?"
"Cool! Let's go."
(I should say that I ended up spending almost three times as much as I promised when we left in the morning. But it was for a good cause.)
We went to a place in Webster Groves first, but she didn't see anything she liked (read: that was reasonably close to the promised price range). So we headed up to Clayton and after stopping at the police station went to eat at one of my favorite spots - The Posh Nosh on Forsyth. They've got great grilled Reuben sandwiches with little buckets of pickles on the tables. A wonderful little Jewish deli.
The weather was spring like and quite conducive to strolling. But we didn't get very far after lunch. Next door to to the Posh Nosh is a very up-scale jewelry store, Simons. It's the kind of place that has valet parking for its patrons. We did a little window shopping and then I suggested we go in and take a look. She was reluctant because she didn't think we'd find anything in our price range. I said, well, then let's just look.
After entering we discovered that they were having a significant sale. The items in three counters or so were reduced to "cost." What that meant was that everything was about half of the sticker price. To say that is "cost" is never quite accurate since jewelry is often marked up 300-400 percent. But, hey, we'll take it.
She looked and picked out 5 or so items that she would really like. The offerings were quite nice and very different. When she had narrowed it down to these five that she would love to have, she strolled over to the other side of the store and left me to decide and purchase the one I wanted to give to me. She wanted to be surprised. I chose the one that is pictured. I could tell she really liked it, but she wondered if it was too expensive. That evening at dinner I gave it to her and she was very happy that I had chosen that one.
The ring is unique. I've never seen anything like it. The designer is Craig Drake, but I can't find it in their online catalog. It's 18k rose and white gold. It's the perfect valentine's day ring - two hearts next to each other. And they split to reveal an inner gold ring that says, "I love you." Click on the picture below for a larger image. |
