India News - Part IV

We made it home safely last night after more than 30 hours of traveling. Mercifully, we had very uneventful flights and easy transitions in London and Chicago. The hardest part was the 11-hour flight from Calcutta to London. My assigned seat for that flight was a middle seat. Once again the plane was booked solid. When I arrived in the cabin to sit down someone was sitting in my seat (12e). It was the middle seat in the middle row. (There's 9 seats across in a Boeing 777 with two isles). The man in my seat said I was mistaken, so I showed him my boarding pass. After he saw it he continued to insist that he was in the right seat. He said he was sitting in 12g not 12e. I tried to explain to him that his assigned seat was a better one, being on the aisle. Then he got angry with me and said something to the affect that I couldn't read the alphabet and also something I couldn't quite understand but didn't have any trouble discerning that it was not a compliment. He actually recited the alphabet to me as if I didn’t know the sequence of the letters. At that point I said, yes sir, and went and sat in his nicer, more comfortable and convenient aisle seat for the duration of the 11-hour flight. Someone was praying for me.

I got home about 11 PM or so and all the kids were up to greet me. Jeffrey hugged me so hard that I didn't think he was going to let go. Yes, it is very good to be home.
