MAiP - J.E.D. Gibbs

Major Project

To create the Web site imps.tv using Flash MX and Dreamweaver MX.

This will promote a stop-motion animation in a similar style to Aardman's Morph or Wallace & Gromit. Video to be recorded using BTV Pro, FrameThief or iStopMotion, edited in Final Cut or Adobe Premiere, composited in Adobe After Effects and presented on DVD with additional features and menus. The models to be digitised using ImageModeler (or a competing product) and recreated or enhanced using 3D software such as Lightwave or Cinema4D. Detailed proposals and monthly progress reports at imps.tv

Practice 2 Individual Object
Using Dreamweaver MX, Microsoft Excel X, Adobe Photoshop 7 and Stitcher 3.51 to create an intranet knowledge base and internet resource for students, staff and technicians who use the Apple Macintosh computers at Southampton City College. Panoramic view of R114 with hotspots leading to more information. Note that for Data Protection reasons the online and student versions do not include student details, access to which are restricted to Southampton City College staff. This online version is presented to provide some guide to the style of the intranet version but lacks access to many of the larger video and help files which were inappropriate to present from an internet web server.

Individual Object 2 Evaluation

Practice 2 Group Interface
A video and two interactive panoramas leading to four doors, each a hotspot to a web site of one of the group members. My contributions are the Stitcher 3.51 panoramas and the video music track. This was created with Apple Soundtrack loops combined with original melody lines played by myself on guitar and with Kevin Thomas on bass, recorded in Cubasis.

Practice 1 description from my learning contract:

"I will take Digital Video as my first option. I have been filming the musician Nick Harper for two years when he has played in the area, with a view to adding video clips to his website, which has just been relaunched. The dv-video needs to be edited, composited where possible to show multiple angles, and colour retouched and manipulated to fit with the style of the new site.

This will need skills in Final Cut Pro and After Effects which I do not yet have. I will also need to research compression methods to deliver the video clips to the widest range of browsers at the best possible quality while keeping file sizes to a minimum. This will require investigation of Quicktime, Real Media and Windows Media Player, and compression/decompression 'codecs' such as Sorenson and Cinepak. To improve interactivity I will also research Flash MX and Director as an alternative means of delivering the video content."

My research on Google's professed 'democracy' serving instead to favour big established corporations over developing and new sites is in step with much at http://www.google-watch.org/ . I was unaware of this site at the time that I wrote the paper. Update Nov2003 - seems MicroSoft has just noticed they have 11% of the market to Google's 70%

My seminar presentation and research dossier on peer-to-peer also predates this July 2003 posting at bbc news.
