Berneking
Berneking was my maternal grandmother's name. Friedrich Wilhelm Berneking emigrated to Illinois in 1857 from Germany.
Lavina Marie Berneking married Leo Walck in 1920 in St. Louis, MO.
I have traced the family to Christoffer from the village of Holzhausen in Westfalen, Germany about 1700. Since I can't find his baptism record in Holzhausen, I suspect the Berneking family moved there from another village, or perhaps the family changed their name to Berneking. There are two possible siblings of Christoffer also listed in the church records. I have extended the pedigree of Christoffer's wife, Ilse, back another two generations! Edler The photograph is my great-grandfather Henry Berneking, Anna Wagner and their family. |
Johnson
Charles Albert Johnson was born in Scotlant in 1866 and traveled the world in his youth. He married Elizabeth Nevans in England about 1895. I have not found either birth record nor their marriage record. They moved to the gold mining area of Calaveras County, California and then became easy to trace.
This is the entire family, probably taken after they moved to Stockton, CA. |
Walck
The Walck family apparently originated in the Tyrol area of Germany. Bernard Walck moved to St. Louis, Moselle, France before 1695. My Grandfather, Leo Walck, was born in Marmoutier, Bas-Rhin, France and emigrated to St. Louis, IL, in 1908 at age 16. Leo married in St. Louis in 1920. He moved his family to Los Angeles, CA, in September 1939 where my mother Carol Walck married Albert Johnson and had me!
The photograph is my great-grandfather Alphonse Walck, Catherine Jost and their family. I think it was taken about 1908 in Alsace (which was part of Germany at the time. ) My grandfather Leo wasn't there for the photograph, so they have his portrait on the table. |
