Introduction
My interest in genealogy began after my mother died in 1994. Suddenly she was no longer available to ask. So I started gathering answers myself. I started by interviewing my surviving aunts and grandmother. Then I discovered the LDS Family History Center with their extensive collection of microfilms and helpful staff.

I grew up aware of only 10 family members. Today I claim 342 direct ancestors and 28,600 people with some relationship. This continues to amaze me!

My mother's ancestors were all Germans. They came from Westfalen (BERNEKING), Pfalz (WAGNER), Hessen (HUBER), and Alsace (WALCK). The earliest immigrants arrived in southern Illinois in 1835 and my grandfather arrived in St. Louis, Missouri, about 1908.

My father's ancestors are tougher to trace. The Billings family has been traced back beyond William Billings who immigrated from England around 1649. I also have two great-grandfathers for whom I can find no record of birth.

I thank the LDS Family History Center for microfilming so many civil and church records and making them available. I also thank the staff at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City who started me with my European genealogy. Without their invaluable help I would have given up a long time ago.

I also thank Leister Productions, Inc. for their wonderful genealogy program for the Macintosh, Reunion.
