Watch for bikes!
Please share the road when traveling.
- Lane sharing is not illegal in California. So, if you are in slow-moving or stalled traffic, check your side mirrors for motorcyclists who may be making progress by "splitting lanes." Be courteous and, if you can, make some room for the approaching motorcycle. Do not change lanes, open your door, toss your cigarette, et cetera, to "get at" a motorcyclist who should not be bothering you.
- Before making a left turn, especially at an intersection, scan oncoming traffic for approaching motorcycles. And watch out for motorcycles that may be hidden from your view by an SUV or truck.
- Check for motorcycles in your blind spot before changing lanes.
- It is not always easy for a motorcyclist to stop in the middle of a turn, especially if it is a slow U-turn. So, if you are ready to turn right at a red light and see a motorcycle in a left-turn lane, let the motorcycle pass before you move.
- Keep a longer following distance between you and any motorcycle that you follow. Not only can a motorcycle come to a stop in a shorter distance, but some road conditions that you may ignore may be potential hazards to motorcycles (for instance, railroad tracks, especially more so if the angle the tracks make with your direction of travel tends to zero degrees; manhole covers; those metal plates that cover road work; uneven surfaces, especially if there is a drop in height between one lane and another; gravel, sand, and fallen leaves).
- Generally, watch out for motorcycles, both in the daytime and at night.
