An excellent new book by Deaf authors Carol Padden and Tom Humphries! A smallish book at 208 pages, including index, it contains a lot of information on Deaf Culture throughout history. List priced at $22.95, but available from Amazon for under $16, the book is worth your money. It is, however, written in Collegiate slang by which I mean, sometimes it is long-winded and dry reading. Somethings I learned included the famous early 20th century movies made by NAD to capture the Sign Language of famous Deaf living at that time, including Gaulladet and Viditz. Deaf History in America is filled with struggles of the Deaf to receive a fair education and to be taught in their own native language, ASL. How the early blue-collar economies of the 40's and 50's created a boom in Deaf Clubs, but then was followed by the long decline, and how now Deaf Culture is being threatened by current events. There is a lot here. Highly recommended!
