Auto Club 500
It's 11:30 PM and still no word yet on what NASCAR's plans are for the rest of this race. It's been a crazy and weird day for this race at California Speedway. Actually most of the weekend. Qualifying was cancelled due to rain. Practice was only 17 laps due to rain. The Nationwide series race was postponed due to rain and was going to go on an hour after the Sprint Cup race.
So Sunday roles around the broadcast begins at 3:30 PM with the green flag to wave shortly after 4:00 PM. Ok, so it's raining and they're trying to dry the track. They finally get the track dried and start the race around 6:10 PM. The race starts pretty well, but there's grooves in the asphalt that the rainwater in the ground is coming up through and a couple wrecks happened. One big one that was bizarre, a car flipped over and another car caught on fire, you can see video of that on NASCAR's website. Ok, so the red flag comes out. They use this saws and cut into the track to relieve the water underneath. It seemed to work so they started the race again. THen a caution came out for rain. Then they started again. Then another caution came out for rain. Then they parked the cars as the rain came down harder. This was around 9:15 PM. And all they completed in that 3 hours was 87 laps.
So now it's 11:38 PM and there's no info posted yet on what will become of the race. The Nationwide race that was scheduled for after the Cup race has already been postponed to tomorrow. It looks like they're still trying to dry the track to get the race restarted.
I do know that Daniel Day-Lewis just won best actor for There Will Be Blood. I knew he would from the first time I saw the trailer for the film.
