Artist’s Comments: My
job
as a high school art teacher requires me to stay in touch with a broad
range of ideas, trends, subject matter, techniques, media, and
materials.
Sometimes the ‘spirit of experimentation’ finds its way from my
classroom
to my studio, but, more often than not, my own work is very
traditional.
My style is realistic, and my medium of choice is watercolor. I use a
painstaking
method called glazing, to build up multiple layers of transparent
colors
to create the hues add textures needed to render my subjects. The still
life is my favorite subject, often including objects that are old,
weathered,
dusty, rusted, worn and stained. These qualities show the effects of
time
and use on the subjects, and indicate that at some time, they were a
part
of the daily routines in someone’s life. In addition to the still life,
I have also painted old tractors, fruit on the branch, close-ups of
flowers,
barns, and some animals. My compositions would fit into the decor of
many
country and suburban homes.
