Open in Case of Emergency
This emergency kit for the mind is designed to provide self-administered, immediate, emotional support. I plan to use it while in the Peace Corps, far from my family, friends, and native culture. I'll fill it with all sorts of interesting things that make me smile and feel warm inside.
This is a work in progress. I will continue to add to it as I prepare for a potential Peace Corps assignment.
The Kit's Contanier
I am going to find an official-looking, durable, red, waterproof container. I'll put the following phrase on the outside of it "Open in Case of Emergency". The container will be about the size of an old-style lunch box.
Item #1
Pictures of Support
A set of pictures of my family and friends with their words of support written on the back of each picture. I will store these pictures in a compact, waterproof, dent proof, and bug proof photo album.
To get good pictures, I will ask each contributor to write words of support on the back of their favorite self-picture. I will Ask them to write what they would say if they knew you needed some good old-fashioned emotional support.
Item #2
Healing Presence Book
The wonderful book "The Art of Being A Healing Presence" by James Miller & Susan Cutshal. This book has a strange an unexpected effect on me -- it gives me a feeling of serenity and provides a hearty meal for my spirit!
Item #3
Small Gifts for Others
When I am feeling sad, or low on energy, giving someone a small, unexpected gift can often cheer me up. I will need to find some small, durable, inexpensive gifts that I can store easily within the kit.
Item #4
Book of Thoughts: Words to Myself
This hand written book is a collection of messages to myself. The messages may tell me to do more of something, less of something, or just give me a phrase to contemplate. Here is a link to my Book of Thoughts.
Item #5
Secret Notes
I will ask some of the people I know to write me secret notes, stored in sealed envelopes, addressed with only the following words:
The notes will provide an immediate connection between the writers and myself -- something that can be very powerful during an emergency situation. Besides, everyone likes to get a secret note now and then.
