We're working on clinics for the Spring and Fall. Stay tuned for more info. We left the fall clinic descriptions below to give you an idea of what you can expect.
All clinics this fall are on Sundays from 3:00PM to 5:00PM
See below or click Calendar for specific days.
You do not need to be a current student of Baltimore Guitar School
to
attend any of our clinics. Let your friends know!
Clinics are 2 hour group lessons typically covering broader topics than your private lessons. Clinics are only $10.00 each except for Getting the Audience Involved and Dealing with Performance Anxiety which are $15.00 each. All require at least 5 participants. Please feel free to pass this information along to your friends, families and band members. The more interaction there is the better the results for all. Clinics will be held in the music room of my home (DIRECTIONS HERE). By the way, we're building a stage and teaching studio in my home. All clinics and lessons will be held there ASAP.
The student lessons and clinic calendar can be found here: Calendar
Here are the latest upcoming Clinic topics:
10/11 Fingerstyle Clapton. (Beg to Int level or just new to Fingerstyle) Eric Clapton is well known for his rock/blues approach to lead playing. In this clinic, we'll cover a great Clapton fingerstyle arrangement from the UNPLUGGED CD called "Hey Hey." Loads of fun to play, very syncopated. Amaze your friends. The words are as simple as can be too. You'll be singing and playing a cool song quickly. We'll get into a little "Tears in Heaven" too.
10/23Getting the Audience Involved (All Levels)
I played in a comedy/musical duo called Change of Pace. My buddy Bob and I worked the college and resort circuit for many years. Our success resulted from our ability to get the audience involved from the start (we needed a little more than just our natural, raw, musical talent). We were never background music. Getting the audience involved is a surefire way of increasing your following, and being able to charge a lot of money as a result. Topics range from song lists to set lists (not the same thing) to banter to storytelling and dealing with hecklers, drunks and other miscreants. Bob Slowey will join me for a very interactive, practical clinic to help you involve the audience in your own style.
11/13Intro to Improvisation (Beg to Int level or just new to playing lead guitar)
Don't you just love listening to those great improvisers like Eric Clapton, BB King, Brian Setzer, Keb Mo, and John Mayer effortlessly glide up and down the fretboard playing a lead that is just locked into those chord changes? Do you want to know what they're thinking when they do that? This clinic will show you. By the end, you'll be doing it too. I guaranty it (no kidding). Money back if you're not satisfied. This clinic is primarily blues focused and covers the Pentatonic scale and arpeggios. We'll cover a bit of theory here, but the focus is on actually improvising. Lots of handouts and stuff to try at home.
11/27Introduction to fingerstyle guitar. (Beg to Int level or just new to Fingerstyle)
Most of you already know about my interest (obsession?) with fingerstyle guitar in the style of Pete Huttlinger, Chet Atkins, and Tommy Emmanuel. In this clinic you can learn the basics of alternating bass fingerstyle playing. We'll learn a great song together that's not too hard, but will impress your friends and family. Focus will be on the right hand technique with easier left hand chords.
12/4Keys to Efficient Practicing. (All Levels)
In your private lessons I will often give you tips on how to practice a specific technique or arrangement. This clinic focuses on practicing as a skill itself. Let's face it, life is too short to spend a month or more learning one or two songs. We'll cover various techniques for learning songs efficiently including reading tab, standard notation rhythm and chord charts. You'll also discover how to learn songs by simply listening to the recording (yes you can do it!). I'll show you exactly how to use a metronome to practice and develop speed. You won't believe what you'll be able to do after this clinic. I learned this stuff from Pete Huttlinger and it really works!
12/11Dealing with Performance Anxiety (All Levels)
Did you ever notice that when you're in your little practice room alone, you can play perfectly and with passion, but get in front of a few people and your brain suddenly forgets that you have ever touched a guitar? In this clinic, we'll videotape your performance (and mine) and then discuss techniques for getting over those nervous feelings and playing and/or singing your best. Always non-judgemental and kind the goal is improvement not criticism. My good buddy and singing partner, Bob Slowey will help out here. We've got tons of stories about performance anxiety over the years, some hysterical and some just plain sad.
