What do international game, film, TV and mobile content companies need to know about doing business in Singapore? The Media Development Authority has most of the answers...

Mr Lok-Yin Seto of the Singapore-based Media Development Authority (MDA) has a recipe for success if you want to do business in or with Singapore. The MDA expedites media-based business ambitions with everything from co-production incentives to introductions to partners, resources, capital and talent. In this interview, conducted in Singapore as part of the X|Media Lab, Mr Seto explains how the MDA catalyses digital media industry growth and is transforming Singapore into a "global media city". He describes Singapore's digital media content export plans for animation, games, digital cinema and mobile content. The MDA gives out scholarships and financial incentives to innovators, grooming new talent.

Mr Seto explains what distinguishes Singapore from other high-tech areas such as Dubai. Singapore is strategically placed, he says, between major Asian cities in places such as China, Korea and Japan, South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand. It has muscular intellectual property protection, a highly educated workforce - and an attractive cosmopolitan lifestyle. He describes MDA-assisted, MIPTV success stories such as the Singapore-based animation, Nanoboy, the $7m German-Singaporean co-production, "The House of Harmony", and the animated feature Zodiac that was sold to Russia, France and China following its Cannes release. He explains how companies such as Disney, MTV, CNBC and ESPN leverage their assets via a Singapore presence. And finally, he describes how pleased he has been with the close working relationship between the MDA and the X|Media Lab, bringing together leaders from the TV, movie, game and mobile content industries to share ideas and perspectives from digital media industries in countries worldwide and mentor Asian-based entrepreneurs and digital creators.
