www.xmedialab.com.au in Singapore: breathing life into robots

Singapore digital philosopher and successful businessman, Mr Ban YJ, has 48,000 toys in his personal collection - each one with a unique set of personal characteristics. Kept in a warehouse, his home and his office, Ban knows each one by name. Playing with them gives Ban continuous inspiration for his hugely successful Singapore-based robotics business. His quest has been to breathe human-like life into his robots - actually called "articulated figures" - by developing the robots themselves, along with software for games, RFID and other technologies that can bring qualities of intelligence and soul to the "toys". In this interview, recorded live via Apple iChat between Singapore and Australia, Ban talks about how he will address the topic of technology and creativity at the forthcoming X|Media Lab conference in Singapore (15-17 June 2005). Netvideo will be in Singapore for the event and cover the dramatic progress being made by Asian nations in the areas of broadband, online technology and digital creativity.
