Why have the Australian commercial free-to-air broadcasters decided to make their program listing guides unavailable to third parties for development and what are the implications of that? Pioneer Electronic Program Guide (EPG) developer (and inventor of the patented V-chip system), Peter Vogel, talks about his new ICE service that lets you click and set your recordings instantly - and jump the advertisements. There is no question the 30 second ad spot is under attack, he says. But it is harder to predict how consumers will record and navigate combined TV and broadband resources (such as Telstra's forthcoming TV and movie online download service). Will the public want navigation for their peer-to-peer TV show file sharing downloads, and if they do, will it be possible to meet that need without infringing copyright? And will companies such as ICE (along with companies such as Akimbo) be the new media giants in a future era when navigating video blogs is as important as finding Lost and Desperate Housewives? Watch the Quicktime version for Mac users here, and the Flash video version for Windows PC users here. The H264 version for video-capable cellphones is here.
