| What immortal hand or eye has tamed the mighty Apple Tiger? Netvideo has it under control... | | Date Created: 02 Jun, 2005, 08:26 AM |
Apple's Tiger is delighting enthusiasts and sceptics. But shortcoming are emerging. Netvideo discusses some, and how to get around them, with MyMacAustralia's Jason Swifte. On the agenda are:
1. EML and spotlight - exporting overstuffed Entourage folders with EEAX from Softhing.com. Just how great is Spotlight for email?
2. The UJ-825 Matshita DVD drive, common on many of today's Powerbooks, affords a strict five DVD region changes before it can be changed no more. Any attempt to read a DVD with the wrong region fails because the DVD is rejected the moment it is put in the drive. VLC can read multi-regions, but doesn't get a chance to go to work on the DVD's content unless the DVD can be accepted by the DVD drive's firmware in the first place. Sigh. So is a DVD drive firmware flash possible? Is there a workaround?
3. Tiger-compatibility for many popular OSX programs comes at considerable cost in some cases (such as Timbuktu), but is free in other cases. Netvideo discusses the upgrades you will need for popular programs such as: Audio Hijack 2.5, BlogWaveStudio 1.1.9, EyeTV 1.8, Timbuktu Pro 8.1.1, TechToolsPro 4.0.4 and the download of DiskWarrior 3.0.3. In some cases, software will continue to function despite lack of Tiger compatibility in a reasonably acceptable way. In other cases, lack of Tiger compatibility makes use of an earlier version unthinkable. Find out the status of each of your favorite programs.
4. Netvideo assesses the value of VersionTracker. Vital tools to remain abreast of the frequent software upgrade vista? Or affectation for the lazy? We think it is the former and explain why.
5. What does Dave from Thursby systems do and why has Tiger rendered it obsolete for the time being?
6. What does Devonthink (DevonTechnologies.com) still do in the Spotlight era?
7. what does Sorenson Squeeze for MPEG4 now do? Can it take an MPEG2 input? Is it Tiger compatible? Why does it accept MPEG2 in the Windows version as an input, but not in the Mac version?
8. How can VolumeWorks, the OSX drive partition management tool, help you with your hard drives?
9. We look at backup strategies: DanzRetrospect 6.0.212 for exports to DVD, Backup 2.0.2 v174.5 to backup to .Mac and restore old backups, but the greatest value from SynchronizeProX now that Carbon Copy Cloner doesn't work. Will Mike Bombich upgrade Carbon Copy for Tiger any time soon? What should you do to backup your boot drive in the mean time?
10. VLC 0.8.2b for Tiger, still buggy - the world awaits the next version.
11. XProEngin java player for Engin VOIP works reasonably well on a fast G5 but is like dragging your phone through molasses on a G4 Powerbook
12. Is VirusBarrierX from Intego really necessary in the Mac OSX world?
