VOIP is bounding forward with new features allowing ever smarter cost savings. One of the latest new boxes to hit the market lets mobile phone users call their home fixed line on a cut price mobile plan, and route their outgoing call through their VOIP box, dramatically cutting the cost of a mobile phone. The CEO of engin.com.au, Ilkka Tales, explains in this interview how this is just the beginning of the VOIP new feature rollout. That is just as well, given engin needs 30,000 paying subscribers to make a profit and doesn't expect to get to that point until 30 June 2006.
But he also comments on the Australian broadband marketplace, describing what the industry expects of Government to accelerate broadband penetration and the pace of competition. He talks about the lessons Australia can learn from British Telecom's decision to turn off its non-IP based phone system by 2010 (replacing it with broadband telephony). He decries the (low) speeds Australian broadband consumers have to put up with and considers how that is retarding the innovative use of video in new communications solutions. Finally, he asks the question whether broadband connections should be decoupled from fixed line rental in Australia and describes the benefits that would come from that.
