The Classic Car Cruise in Helena on Saturday, May 3 was the major
topic of discussion last week at the Karnes County Historical Society
monthly meeting. Members finalized plans for their fundraiser, a sausage
plate lunch with all the trimmings, that they will be serving throughout
the event.
Vintage cars from many different eras will be arriving throughout the
late morning until early afternoon. Everyone is welcome to attend the
event, held on the shady grounds of the Karnes County Museum in Helena.
Admission is free, both to view the cars and to tour any of the historic
buildings in Old Helena.
Visitors can also enjoy a sausage lunch for $6 a plate. Picnic tables
are available, or to-go plates may be purchased. Members of the Historical
Society will be pre-selling tickets, but tickets may also be purchased
at the event.
Other topics of discussion were repairs and renovations to the museum,
Sickenius Farmhouse, and grounds. A prioritized list was drawn up, with
the first projects being flagpole repair and bracing the two-story gallery
on the courthouse.
A major project to update and extend electrical connections throughout
the museum complex is also underway, at an estimated cost of $4000 for
materials. Donations are being sought for this much-needed work.
A cleanup day was set for Saturday, April
26 at 9 a.m. Members were also asked to bring baked goods for
the Sweet Shoppe on May 3.
The next meeting of the Karnes County Historical Society will be held
at 5 p.m. in Helena on Monday, April 28, 2008.
Membership is open to everyone, and volunteers are always needed. For
more information about the meetings and activities of the Historical
Society, call the museum at 830 780-3210 during regular museum hours,
