A note about winter cleanings: Cleaning and regular water changes are crucial to get the best growth and color from your fish. If crud accumulates during the winter, even though the fish hibernate and slow down, the bacteria that can kill your fish also hibernate. So, you could end up with a bunch of re-circulating crud in the spring and overload the filter. Don't forget, it will take around 6-8 weeks (almost 2 months) next spring for the filter to get working again to full capacity.
