Canyon de Chelly, scenery: found 222 miles NE of Flagstaff, 68 miles NW of Window Rock in the middle of the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. It has often been described as more spectacular than the Grand Canyon. People have called it home for more than 2,000 years, and there are more than 100 prehistoric dwelling sites in the area today. The Navajo consider the more than 100 miles of canyons to be sacred ground. The scenery in this area often speaks for itself, with timeless beauty and fascinating contrasts. Seeing it with a Navajo guide (required in order to access the canyon floor) provides you with some of the history of the area, as well as specific information about the signifigance of what you are viewing.
