Canyon de Chelly, Pictographs and Petroglyphs: drawings on rock, here on the canyon wall, by the early people. Pictographs are those painted on rock (either directly onto the rock, or by blowing paint out of your mouth over a pattern, like your hand), while petroglyphs are designs pecked into the rock. They were more than just artistic decoration; they expressed spiritual connection, daily activities and experiences, and made comments on their society. The earliest were done by the Anasazi, but Hopi and Navajo also added distinctive drawings.
