Canyon de Chelly,
Pictographs and Petroglyphs: drawings
on rock, here on the canyon wall, by the early people. Pictographs are
those painted on rock (either directly onto the rock, or by blowing
paint out of your mouth over a pattern, like your hand), while petroglyphs
are designs pecked into the rock. They were more than just artistic
decoration; they expressed spiritual connection, daily activities and
experiences, and made comments on their society. The earliest were done
by the Anasazi, but Hopi and Navajo also added distinctive drawings.
