James Hepburn, 4th Earl Bothwell was the son of Patrick Hepburn, 3rd Earl of Bothwell and Agnes Sinclair. He was born circa 1535. He married, firstly, Jean Gordon, daughter of George Gordon, 4th Earl of Huntly and Elizabeth Keith, on 24 February 1566. He and Jean Gordon were divorced on 3 May 1567 on the grounds of adultery. He married, secondly, Mary Stewart, Queen of Scotland, daughter of James V Stewart, King of Scotland and Marie de Guise, on 15 May 1567 at Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, in a forced marriage. He was also reported to have been married on 13 December 1565. He died on 14 April 1578 at Dragsholm Castle, Denmark. He was buried at Faarevejle Church, Dragsholm, Denmark.
He succeeded to the title of 4th Earl Bothwell in September 1556. His marriage to an unknown person was annulled on 7 May 1567 on the grounds of consanguinity. He gained the title of Earl of Shetland on 12 May 1567. He gained the title of Duke of Orkney on 12 May 1567. On 20 December 1567 his estates and titles were declared forfeit. - [1]
