GNER WiFi Service
a bit like 3G in terms of
speed...
For the last forty odd minutes I have been using
GNER's train wifi service. It's not that
fast, but certainly much better than no internet whilst travelling by train.
Download speeds seem to be in the region of 1-2
KB/s.
One feature I do like is the ability to view where you
are...If you are travelling standard
class then it is quite expensive, comparable to a typical Starbucks wireless
hotspot. However if you are travelling
first class then it is free, I managed to get an off-peak first class ticket for
a much lower price than if I travelled standard class at peak
times.I wonder if First Great Western
will do something similar on the main line between London and Bristol, I hope
so, as I travel on them much more than I do GNER, this is in fact the first time
I have travelled by GNER and I doubt I will be travelling with them again in the
near future, my next trip will in fact be by Virgin trains back down to
Bristol.One thing that both Virgin
Trains and GNER do which First Great Western don't is provide power sockets for
laptops, so here I am with my PowerBook plugged in and no worries about
batteries.
