802.11n extended range only for 802.11n clients
though there may be a marginal
benefit...
Some people are looking at the advertising for the new Airport Extreme 802.11n
and are quite excited by the twice the range
claim.Generally to take advantage of the
extended range of 802.11n, the clients must also be running 802.11n
adapters.In other words, though the
802.11n router offers greater range this is only for computers which support
802.11n. Those computers with 802.11g will not be able to benefit from the
greater range.Netgear also claims that
the range of ordinary 802.11b and 802.11g clients can be improved up to 20% when
using their 802.11n routers, but I suspect that in real life this will be about
10%.Of course 20% is a lot less than
100%.
