Open Unsecured Wireless Network


hmm...

Today (away from the office) I found and connected to an unsecured Linksys wireless network that a hotel next to where I was working was broadcasting.

Normally I wouldn't touch an unknown network due to the evil wireless network issue, but was told that this was not one of those. However I did connect with the firewall up and running, just to see if I could.

For the hotel guests this kind of network does make life easier, but leaving such a network open and unsecured is inviting unscrupulous individuals to use the network for nefarious means, ie spam, illegal downloads and other illegal activity.

It will be the poor hotel owner who will face the court or potential police action, but I am sure if they are innocent they will be okay, but it should be noted under UK law ignorance is no defence in the face of the law.
