Free wireless, but couldn’t get iChat video to work

at the Radisson SAS in Espoo in Finland...

In most hotels I have used wireless in hotels in the UK I have not only been forced to pay, but also found that wireless was only available in the public areas. Also the fees have been (in my opinion) been somewhat excessive, for example £6 for one hour!

I was pleasantly surprised to find in the Radisson SAS in Espoo in Finland they gave guests free wireless which was not only available in the public areas, but also in the bedrooms.

Speed was pretty good, though it did seem to take an age for my MacBook Pro to “find” and connect to the wireless network.

One issue I did have was trying to get video iChat working, I have been able to use textual iChat without issue, but video didn’t work at all, we kept getting a communication error.

I suspect it may have been something to do with my router, as I got the same error when we went via my VPN.

The error message was not very useful, but then again I am not very good at interpreting error reports.

Having said that the iSight camera in the MacBook Pro (and the MacBook and iMac models) is really useful.

In the end I did some little video clips (captured using Quicktime Pro), converted them into Flash video and uploaded them to a web server.
