Potential problem with Tiger and Vodafone 3G Datacard
should I upgrade or not...
I
have not yet upgraded the G4 PowerBook to Tiger, as it was needed for some
urgent meetings and presentations and I did not have time to sort out problems
or issues. As it happens I am still running
10.3.7.I found a post on
the Apple Discussion Forums which implies that the Vodafone 3G Datacard may not
be compatible with Tiger.It
says:I have the upgraded to
the Tiger operating system and tried installing the vodafone Mobile connect
datacard / software version 2.01(downloadable from the www.vodafone.co.uk
website. When I try
installing the software on to the powerbook, the whole screen freezes. Since
upgrading to the Tiger OSX, I have been experincing freezing problems and a few
other issues. I have spoken to Vodafone who are investigating this for me. they
have provided me with a resolution, which you will find below.
Compatibility Issue
between Vodafone Mobile Connect and Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger"
Vodafone Mobile Connect has been
developed and tested on pre-release versions of Mac OS X 10.4 'Tiger'. However,
Vodafone is unable to guarantee complete compatibility until further testing on
the publicly-released version of 10.4 has been completed.
Please note, no serious
problems have been encountered and none are expected, but the software may be
unable to connect in certain circumstances.
If you have updated to
Tiger from a previous operating system, and have a problem with Mobile Connect,
please try the following:
1. Start your PowerBook from the Tiger
installation CD or DVD (insert the Tiger CD or DVD and restart the PowerBook
whilst holding down the 'C' key on the keyboard)
2. Select 'Disk Utility' from the menu on
the top edge of your PowerBook screen
3. Select the disk upon which your PowerBook
system is installed
4. Click the 'Repair Privileges' button and
wait until this process has been completed
5. Click the 'Repair Volume' button and wait
until this process has been completed
6. After the repairs are completed, restart
your PowerBook
7. Use Software Update - in the Apple menu
in the top left hand corner of your screen - to update to Mac OS 10.4.1 or
later.
If the problem persists:
1. Run the Vodafone Mobile Connect installer
2. Select the 'Un-install' option from the
drop-down menu in the installer window
3. After the software has been un-installed,
restart your PowerBook
4. Re-install Vodafone Mobile Connect.
Vodafone expect to approve Release 2.01 of Vodafone Mobile Connect for use with
Tiger, or, if necessary, make a software update available, very shortly.
So it seems it might be worth waiting until
Release 2.0.1 of the Vodafone Mobile Connect software is released before I
upgrade the PowerBook to Tiger as I do use the 3G Datacard a lot.
