Need different 3G cards
none available in the
UK...
One of the most useful devices I use on a regular
basis is a Vodafone 3G Datacard. (In the US 3G is often referred to as EVDO or
UMTS).
I use this with both a Sony VAIO
and an Apple G4 PowerBook and it works really quite well, even on a moving
train.
I have one issue, two new
computers I have don’t have a PCCard (PCMCIA) slot, the Fujitsu Siemens
P1510 only has a CF card slot and the MacBook Pro only has a 34 ExpressCard
slot.
There is currently no ExpressCard
3G card available and I guess that even if there is one it won’t be Mac
compatible.
I have seen a 3G CF card
however it looks like it is only available in Japan or from specialist
suppliers.
I have been considering other
options and a Bluetooth connection to a 3G phone seems like a possibility. I
need to check how I can get a 3G phone and one that supports data and one that
works with the SIM card in my 3G
datacard!
Therefore at the moment both
the P1510 and the MacBook Pro don’t go travelling unless I know there is
going to be wifi.
