Sixty Six

it's a film of two halves....

Went to see Working Title's new film last night, Sixty Six.

It is the summer of '66, and England is about to be consumed by World Cup Fever. For 12 year-old Bernie though, the biggest day of his life is looming: his Bar Mitzvah, and the day he becomes a man. However, Bernie's family are increasingly distracted by the threat of losing their business and their wayward older son, and the scale of Bernie's Bar Mitzvah diminishes daily. Worst of all the Cup Final is scheduled to take place on the same day and when England makes it through the qualifying rounds, Bernie's longed-for Bar Mitzvah looks set to be a complete disaster...

The film about dreams, about growing up, about the sixties, about change, has its moments and is well done in many respects.

Written with the help of Richard Curtis I was hoping that it would be as funny as Four Weddings or Bridget Jones or even About a Boy (which I enjoyed).

Well it is not a bad film, the latter half being a lot funnier that the first half and it has its moments.

The cast are great, the story is funny, but it doesn't have the laughs that Richard's other films have. Which I suspect wouldn't be too bad, but it is being marketed as "another hit from the makers of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bridget Jones".

I am not a great fan of Catherine Tate, but she does do a really good job in this film, to be honest I didn't recognise her until about half way through.

Overall I did enjoy the film and would recommend it for a viewing, but don't go expecting Four Weddings as you will be disappointed.
