Through A Scanner Darkly

an animated adaptation of Philip K Dick's 1977 sci-fi drug novel

An image from Richard Linklater's A Scanner Darkly, an animated adaptation of Philip K Dick's 1977 sci-fi drug novel, to be released in UK cinemas on August 18 2006. Linklater is the first director to use digital interpolated-rotoscoping, an animation technique which 'paints over' live action DV footage, to create an entire film. Linklater first worked with the Texas-based Bob Sabiston on the dream-like 2001 drama Waking Life. Starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder, A Scanner Darkly is a dystopian thriller that tells the story of an undercover narcotics cop who is ordered to spy on his friends and eventually himself.

This looks like a really clever animation technique, the trailer also looks really good as well, this can be viewed here .
