So suffice to say it is a spectacle we're putting on right now (two more shows tomorrow), but it's not "The Mr. Di Gioia Show", at least I hope people don't think that way.... I went into tonight's show feeling a bit apprehensive about what people will think of it, and what they'll think of me...and then the show started, and I realized that it's not about me at all--it is about the kids, and about potential and growth.... I would love to share with you photos of the show, but professional responsibility dictates that all those involved remain nameless and faceless, though in the interest of gloating and being a proud papa for this production (which I swear will be my last at this school, and the last in a school for a while), I'm creating a new photo gallery page here celebrating the success of Oz.

Not everyday is like Sunday

Chances are there will be little activity from me here over the next week or so, so while I had a few thoughts floating I thought I'd make a post.... I still don't fully know what happened to it, but there's two theories: a) the phone somehow fell out of my pocket when I put my jacket over the chair last Thursday and became lodged between the arm rest and the seat (the chair is a typical rolling office chair). It stayed lodged there until somehow I dislodged it this morning, which means that it was there all along, even while I was whipping the chair around on Thursday afternoon looking for the phone under the desk, and all day Friday while I sat in the chair.... One of my personal favourite albums of the last ten years (and definitely on my all-time favourite list), Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is a rare beast: a great album sonically with a great story about it's birth/release.... When they finally turned the record in for release, Reprise Records, the band's record company (which is owned by Time-Warner) decided that they wanted a few changes to it before releasing it. The band said no, the company said fine, and Wilco were dumped from the label, and allowed to take the record and shop it around for a company willing to release it They eventually signed on to Nonsuch Records (which is also owned by Time-Warner--the company who paid for the record and then dumped the band ultimately end up buying the record back for three times what it cost them to make it!).

"not a creature was stirring..."

Saturday morning I realized that there were mouse droppings on the kitchen floor, and then found a stash of the cat's food that was piled just under the piano.... In doing so, they are repeatedly reminding us how VITAL these program options are to Canadians everywhere, how much raw talent and energy Canadian broadcasters and the subjects of their broadcasts have, and just how necessary the CBC is to Canada.

...While on the subject, my fellow loyal listeners to Metro Morning, LISTEN UP: Andy, Kevin, Jim, and Jill are back on the air as of today with TORONTO UNLOCKED, their morning show coming to us live from the studios of CIUT University of Toronto Radio, at 89.5 on the FM dial. How can you not when the first lyrics you hear are: "If I could open my arms and span the length of the isle of Manhattan/I'd bring it to where you are, making a lake of the East River and Hudson/If I could open my mouth wide enough for a marching band to march out/They would make your name sing and bend through the alleys and bounce off all the buildings"?

...As far as I'm concerned, the band have not comprised their sound or vision by following a diabolical record company plan to make the record buying public rush out to buy this record (Ben Gibbard says the title Plans actually has a tongue-in-cheek connection to their move to a major label).

Stand-outs so far are the above-quoted opener "Marching Bands of Manhattan", single "Soul Meets Body", and the quiet, yet heartbreakingly gorgeous "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" (sample lyric: "If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks/Then I'll follow you into the dark")--a song as much about life and love, as death and loss.

Katrina and the waves

Sometimes I think I take it for granted that when I come home from a weekend away, or come home at night from work for that matter, that my house will still be where I left it. I was watching CNN earlier this evening, and listening to a woman from Bilouxi describe what it was like going back to her apartment building from the shelter she was staying in and finding that all she had left to call home was a shoe. (I could make a snide comment about old women and living in a shoe right now, but somehow I think that would belittle the seriousness of this situation).
