Oasis
Drama Lifesize Home Entert NR
Hailed as the seminal film of the Korean New Wave, acclaimed director Lee Chang-dong's Oasistells the story of two societal misfits (the award winning Moon So-ri and Sol Kyung-gu) and their struggle to find love and acceptance. Fate helped bring them together; family fought to keep them apart. The film truly is "a triumph...that gives humanism back it's good name (LA Weekly)."

Ocean's Twelve
Action & Adventure Warner Home Video PG-13
I have to say I enjoyed Ocean's 12 although Ocean's 11 was much better. When I rented the DVD I was first disappointed by all of the darn previews. Second when I clicked on the "Special Features" the only contents were "Theatrical Trailer"!!!! I couldn't belive it. Don't get me wrong the special features usually aren't that good on DVDs, but common. It didn't have anything! It looked like an old movie that was just put on DVD. A brand new blockbuster hit should have special features, that's just my opinion.

The Order
Action & Adventure Columbia Tristar Hom R
Jean-Claude Van Damme may never have risen to the top ranks of action stars, but his movies have been consistently enjoyable--partly because they don't take themselves too seriously. In The Order, Van Damme plays a thief of religious artifacts whose archeologist father has found the lost scripture of a mysterious religious order. When the old man is kidnapped, Van Damme soon finds himself cruising around the twisty streets of Jerusalem, getting into dynamic kickboxing battles while disguised as a Hasidic Jew. With the help of a beautiful Israeli cop (Sofia Milos), Van Damme uncovers a plot within the religious order that leads to secret catacombs beneath the holy city. Silly? Perhaps, but directed with vitality and surprising wit. Van Damme is trim and energetic, Milos is engaging, and a cameo by Charlton Heston (!) only adds to the general atmosphere of spunky fun. --Bret Fetzer

Out of Time
Action & Adventure Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer R
Partly inspired by 1948's The Big Clock and its nominal 1987 remake No Way Out, the Denzel Washington thriller Out of Time is quite enjoyable if you ignore its implausible plotting. Like those earlier films, this reunion of Washington and his Devil in a Blue Dress director Carl Franklin is about a man--in this case the police chief (Washington) of sleepy Banyan Key, Florida--who falls into a trap set by others, sinks into legal quicksand of his own making, and must race the clock to extricate himself from a series of incriminating setbacks. The Florida setting adds welcome character to the potboiler plot, and Washington's screen-cred makes it easy to overlook the absurdities of rookie writer David Collard's screenplay. Eva Mendes is sharp and sensible as Washington's estranged wife (do you think they'll reconcile for a happy ending?), and the talented John Billingsley--whose portrayal of "Dr. Phlox" on TV's Enterprise is vastly underrated--is a constant delight as Washington's medical examiner, beer buddy and wily co-conspirator. It's hardly a classic, but Out of Time goes well with a big tub of popcorn. --Jeff Shannon

Pearl Harbor
Drama Walt Disney Home Video PG-13
To call Pearl Harbor a throwback to old-time war movies is something of an understatement. Director Michael Bay's epic take on the bombing that brought the United States into World War II hijacks every war movie situation and cliché (some affectionate, some stale) you've ever seen and gives them a shiny, glossy spin until the whole movie practically gleams. Planes glisten, water sparkles, trees beckon--and Bay's re-creation of the bombing itself, a 30-minute sequence that's tightly choreographed and amazingly photographed, sets the action movie bar up quite a few notches. And in updating the classic war film, Bay and screenwriter Randall Wallace (Braveheart) use that old plot standby, the love triangle--this time, it's between two pilots (Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett) and a nurse (Kate Beckinsale) who find themselves stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, during what they thought would be a nice, sunny tour of duty. Then, of course, history intervened. For the first 90 minutes of the movie, Affleck and Beckinsale find a nice, appealing chemistry that plays on his strengths as a movie star and hers as a serious actress--he gives her glamour, she gives him smarts. Their truncated romance--the beginning of which is told in flashback so we can get right to the point where he has to leave her to go to England--works, thanks to their charm. They're no Kate and Leo from Titanic (a strategy the film strives hard toward), but they're pretty darn adorable in their own right. Hartnett, as the not entirely unwelcome third wheel, squints bravely but makes only a slight dent in the film. Everyone else in Pearl Harbor--from Cuba Gooding Jr.'s brave navy seaman to Jon Voight's able impersonation of FDR--is pretty much a glorified walk-on, taking a backseat to the pyrotechnics and action sequences that keep the three-hour film in fairly constant motion. But when that action does take hold, Pearl Harbor is quite a thrilling ride. --Mark Englehart

The Perfect Storm
DVD Special Offers - Drama Warner Home Video
Setting out for the one last catch that will make up for a lacklustre fishing season, Captain Billy Tyne (George Clooney) pushes his boat the Andrea Gail out to the waters of the Flemish Cap off Nova Scotia for what will be a huge swordfish haul. While his crew is gathering fish, three storm fronts (including a hurricane) collide to create a "perfect storm" of colossal force, and Billy's path back to Gloucester, Massachusetts, takes them right smack into the middle of it. Wolfgang Petersen's adaptation of Sebastian Junger's seafaring best-seller is a faithful if by-the-numbers true-story account of a monster storm that rocked New England in 1991, specifically Tyne's commercial fishing boat and its crew. Junger's tale fashioned a compelling if staid narrative out of seemingly disparate events, but this film adaptation tends to flatten out the story into a conventional if absorbing story of man vs nature, as the crew fights for survival against the awesome waves the storm kicks up. The central part of the film, which cuts between the Andrea Gail's fight to stay afloat and the attempts of the coast guard to rescue a yacht in peril, is suspenseful action of the first degree, aided by some awesome computer-generated waves.Still, it's a long way to that action, with an extended first act that consists mainly of stoic men, crying women and a fair amount of "don't go out into the sea" dialogue--in other words, a compelling story has been shoehorned into standard summer movie fare. It's too bad, as Peterson assembled an excellent cast--including Mark Wahlberg, Diane Lane, John C. Reilly and William Fichtner among them--but seems to opt for only a surface exploration of these characters, though Clooney seems to have a touch of Captain Ahab in him. You may still be won over by the movie, but for a more in-depth portrait, go to Junger's book for the missing details. --Mark Englehart

Perlasca 驚刼餘生
Época-Histórico The Walt Disney Company

Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl
Action & Adventure Walt Disney Home Video PG-13
As far as the movie as a whole I'd have to say that it deserves 5 stars simply for the beautiful colorful seascapes, perfect musical score and awesome costumes. Besides that, this movie combines everything we go to the movies for: romance, adventure, comedy, special effects, a stunningly beautiful young woman and a beautiful pair of men.Which brings me to my second reason for writing this: Johnny Depp. First off I must say that his character (Capt. Jack Sparrow) could have been a bit funny but overall flat, and Mr. Depp brings to life a witty, perfectly crafted, staggering seadog whose charm is impossible to resist. Even the black eyeliner and gold teeth compliment his good looks and it's impossible to resist the devilish twinkle in his eye! Ladies, see it for Johnny! And for those who prefer a more clean shaven version, there is the serious, love driven character of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), who will stop at nothing to retrieve his "bonnie lass" from the cursed Black Pearl and it's ghastly immortal crew, led by the deliciously evil Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). And of course the fresh, adorable Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) will have every adolescent boy squirming.Overall, this movie combines humor that will have adults and children laughing alike, and although a bit ghostly at times, is not too scary for younger kids. I love Pirates and can't WAIT for the upcoming sequel which is being filmed right now. Happy watching!

THIS IS A VERY GOOD SEQUEL TO 1987'S PREDATOR. ALOT OF PEOPLE GOT UPSET BECAUSE ARNOLDS CHARACTER OF "DUTCH" ISN'T IN THIS ONE, AND I AGREE THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A DETAILED EXPLANATION FOR THIS. I READ THE BOOK ABOUT 13 YEARS AGO AND IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN THE EXPLANATION WAS THAT HE HAD DIED FROM WOUNDS FROM HIS ENCOUNTER WITH THE PREDATOR. BUT THE FILMS, AS SOME OTHER REVIEWERS HAVE POINTED OUT, ARE NOT ABOUT HIS CHARACTER ANYWAY. THERE ABOUT THE PREDATOR. AND ONCE YOU REALIZE THAT, THIS MOVIE BECOMES PRETTY DA_N GOOD. THE PLOT IS STRAIGHT FORWARD AND ACTUALLY INTERESTING. HERE IT IS: THE PREDATORS COME TO EARTH EVERY NOW AND AGAIN LOOKING FOR A CHALLENGE, THIS TIME THE CHALLENGE IS IN LOS ANGELES AND DANNY GLOVER IS A COP WHO IS TRYING TO STOP THE ALIEN. THAT'S IT. NOT TOO COMPLICATED, JUST LOTS OF GORE AND ACTION AND GREAT F/X. BOTTOM LINE: UNLIKE MOST SEQUELS, THIS IS A GOOD MOVIE AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
