Pride FC - Cold Fury 2
Sports Highlights Bci Eclipse Company NR
Cold Fury 2 is a must buy for MMA fans but not for the casual fight fan. There's hardly any fireworks in this DVD. Silva fans might also be a little disappointed, as he fought an overmatched Otsuka who seemed more concerned on surviving than winning. Semmy Schilt's fight was probably the most brutal of the fights. The fights of Ninja Rua and Alan Goes are two examples of world class mixed martial arts,, with the Rua fight involving more strikes and the Goes fight showing more grappling skills. On a funny note, the Rampage Jackson fight against Matsui was an odd one. Listen to the commentators describe Jackson as "relaxed," but any honest observer will not be able to deny that Jackson was high on something coming in to the ring. See it for yourself.

Pride FC - Collision Course
Sports Highlights Bci Eclipse Company Unrated
Many fighters were caught at a transitional stage in this event. The new rule, which allowed the fighters to kick and knee their opponents when they are on their all fours, really played a big factor to the upsets in this event. This rule is what made Pride as close as it can be to a "no rule" contest. The change gave the strikers a lot of advantage over the grapplers. However, the fights were pretty dull except for the main event.

Pride Fighting Championship: Final Conflict 2004
Sports Brentwood NR
Final Conflict 2004 was the finals of the PRIDE Heavyweight Grand Prix and was overall a tremendous event.

This event showcases the best fighters in the world. Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Nogueira, Yuki Kondo, Mirko Cro Cop, and Wanderlei Silva are among the mega-stars you will see on this event.

Despite the controversial ending the main event, this event is packed with great fights. And of course, the MMA legend himself, Kazushi Sakuraba is on the card and puts on a great performance.

4)Dan Henderson vs Shungo Oyama - oyama suprises and stands with dan and exchanges punches, great ending that you dont catch until the replay. ****

7)Fedor Emelianenko vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira(twin brothers with the nogueira in the second fight)- this is some of the hardest core ground and pound there is in this fight for the heavyweight title. *****

Pride Fighting Championships: High Octane

This event was dissapointing because of some freak injuries, but Wanderlei vs Rampage alone is worth the price this event.

Wanderlei Silva v Quinton Jackson- Probably the best fihgt of 2004 both guys were floored during the fight and came back to put on a great show.

Cro-Cop v Josh Barnett- Very dissapointing the way it ended.

James Thompson v Aleksander Emilianenko- This was a decent fight and you see Aleksander is for real.

Allistair Overeem v Hiromitsu Kanehara- All I have to say is mismatch, you get a chance to see what a thai boxer can do with their knees.

Dan Henderson v Kazuhiro Nakamura- I was really looking forward to this fight but it was very dissapointing

Pride:Bushido 1
Sports Bci Eclipse Company NR
Pride's 'Bushido 1' show was put on a couple years ago. It was to promote up-and-coming fighters. It also had a different format than normal Pride matches, with Bushido matches consisting of only two rounds(10 minutes in the first, 5 in the second). The fighters also had to keep the action moving or be penalized with a yellow card.

The first show(there have been six more since)wasn't too bad. It featured Team Gracie vs. Team Japan. The event featured the most Gracies ever on a single card: there were five(including Renzo and Ryan)all with Royce in their corner. On the opposite side were the Japanese(mostly younger fighters, a slimmed down Shoji, and Carlos Newton)with Sakuraba in theirs.

On paper the event looked great, but in my opinion didn't live up to the hype. The matches were okay(most going the distance)but none were truly spectacular. Its not the greatest event Pride has ever put on, but its worth picking up for the $10 price here on Amazon.

Pride:Total Elimination 2004
Sports Bci Eclipse Company NR
Pride GP Total Elimination 2003 was a tough act to follow with a great MW/LHW tournament. This time, Pride GP brought to you the HW version of the GP and it was a tournament with a pretty stellar crowd. The first ever Grand Prix winner (2000) Mark "the Hammer" Coleman is back to defend the title he won in years past with a field full of up-and-coming fighters as well as the Interim HW Champion Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira and the HW Champion Fedor Emelianenko.

No fight goes to the judges in this event. Suprise finishes, new finishing maneuvers, ground-n-pound, flash knockdowns, and technical ground work made this one of the better Pride events in a very long time. Every fighter on this card was here to advance to the next step in the GP: Critical Countdown 2004.

This is a must have MMA DVD for all of you die hard MMA/Pride FC/UFC fans. If you enjoyed Total Elimination 2003, you'll truly enjoy this event. If you enjoy MMA and Pride FC as a whole, you'll love this event.

just watch out for that left hook :)

Pumping Iron
Documentary Warner Home Video PG
Arnold Schwarzenegger works the crowds, plots strategies for defeating multiple opponents, shares his parents' values with the press, and inspires legions of admirers with his resolute optimism about the future. And all of this long "before" he decided to run for governor of California, in 1977's hit documentary, "Pumping Iron". Larger than life, though not necessarily larger than his rivals for the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia bodybuilding titles (especially a young Lou Ferrigno, hot on Arnold's competitive trail but much less interesting), Schwarzenegger still comes across, at age 28, as a consummate politician, smart, likable, and crafty about exploiting others' psychological weaknesses. The film still feels redundant (there's only so much beefcake the human eye will tolerate), but the emotional dramas--the unrewarded hard work, the unanswered hopes--are compelling. Complete with a revealing 2003 interview with Schwarzenegger and a reunion of the film's bodybuilders and director. "--Tom Keogh"

Mr. Chu is a recently widowed tai-chi master who moves from Beijing to New York to live with his son. Chu's American daughter-in-law, Martha, can't stand having him around the house. He finds her Western ideas on raising children and keeping a home to be curious at best. These conflicts test family bonds and Mr. Chu's highly developed sense of balance. This was the first feature as a director for Ang Lee (Sense and Sensibility) and has many of the hallmarks of his later, better-known works: finely observed characters, gentle yet pointed humor, and the ability to see and understand both sides of a cultural divide. The charismatic Sihung Lung (who also starred in Lee's The Wedding Banquet and Eat Drink Man Woman) plays Chu with strength and understatement, but Deb Snyder is miscast in a thankless role. The title refers to a tai-chi exercise that's at the center of the film's best scene, a standoff in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant. --Geof Miller

Raging Bull
Drama Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer R
Martin Scorsese's brutal black-and-white biography of self-destructive boxer Jake LaMotta was chosen as the best film of the 1980s in a major critics' poll at the end of the decade, and it's a knockout piece of filmmaking. Robert De Niro plays LaMotta (famously putting on 50 pounds for the later scenes), a man tormented by demons he doesn't understand and prone to uncontrollably violent temper tantrums and fits of irrational jealousy. He marries a striking young blond (Cathy Moriarty), his sexual ideal, and then terrorizes her with never-ending accusations of infidelity. Jake is as frightening as he is pathetic, unable to control or comprehend the baser instincts that periodically, and without warning, turn him into the rampaging beast of the title. But as Roman Catholic Scorsese sees it, he works off his sins in the boxing ring, where his greatest athletic talent is his ability to withstand punishment. The fight scenes are astounding; they're like barbaric ritual dance numbers. Images smash into one another--a flashbulb, a spray of sweat, a fist, a geyser of blood--until "you" feel dazed from the pummeling. Nominated for a handful of Academy Awards (including best picture and director), "Raging Bull" won only two, for De Niro and for editor Thelma Schoonmacher. "--Jim Emerson"
