Outside the studios...

"I would show these studios my discography with all these indie bands that people in my circle really revered. But they were like 'You can make coffee.' And I thought 'I'm not going to start that far down on the ladder this time.' I was living in this neighborhood, Cobble Hill, and I stumbled upon an ad in a window, saying 'Firehouse for Rent.' Well, the going rate for commercial space in Manhattan was $10,000 per month, and I couldn't swing that. It's an old firehouse that has two main huge doors on the front for the trucks and horses, and then two kinds of living quarters above the main areas, directly above where the first set of engines and ladders were. It was a little beat up and needed some paint, but it had this whole cool old vibe of firehouse and wood floors. It had an original pressed tin cieling from the 1800s, and was one giant room. At the end of this giant room was an office with lots of windows, perfect for a control room. When I saw it, it was only $1,000 bucks. I found every cent I had, because I had to lay out a single chunk to secure it. I thought "I've gotta have this place or the creative part of my brain will go soft."
