This exceptional book takes its readers on a tour of 18 of the world's most exciting and interesting recording studios. Jeff Touzeau has clearly put a lot of thought into choosing the subject studios, and although many of them aren't instantly recognisable (obvious venues such as Abbey Road, Electric Lady and Sun Studios are all curiously absent) every one of them has a story to tell that will capture the imagination of the reader. In fact, by omitting some of the more famous studios, the author is able to explore life in the studios themselves without getting too caught up in the famous recordings that have been made in each one. In what other book is it possible to read about the fascinating Great Hall at Allaire Studios (a building that would not look out of place on the Lord of the Rings film set), or the colourful murals and the unique innerTUBE Audio Mag Mic (a vintage Neumann U87 microphone built-in to a Maglite torch) at Roselane East Studios? It is a thoroughly enjoyable read that's nicely balanced between informative editorial and stunning imagery. VERDICT: This is the closest most readers will come to any one of these 18 world-class recording environments. A coffee table must-have for aspiring engineers. 8 out of 10 stars.

This book is very easy to pick up when you have five minutes to kill, or sit with for a good hour."

"Real World emerges as a studio-cum village, a universe within itself which just happens to boast a Starship-worthy control room surrounded by a moat; Allaire reveals itself as a bucolic country retreat with ingeniously designed live rooms. There are so many more, and Touzeau's insightful interviews with each facility's overseer delve deeply into the architectural, acoustical and even psychological qualities of each of these studios."

Touzeau has written this handsome, 200 plus page coffee table tome which caters to music lovers, not just music recorders. Touzeau's not afraid to let the conversations veer away from studio chatter, and makes each of the sections easy to dive into, even if you're by no means tech savvy or a studio afficionado."

MAKING TRACKS: UNIQUE RECORDING STUDIO ENVIRONMENTS is a gorgeous display of unique recording studios which are all special, from million-dollar facilities spread over acres of land to small studios in cities. They are housed in all kinds of structures from modern office and new construction to old churches and sawmills, and the author interviews studio owners and users alike in a survey which considers the physical attributes of the recording environment. Color photos of interiors and exteriors compliment working analysis of how they were developed, architectural insights, and how they were engineered to craft a working studio environment. From insights on musicians who have recorded at these studios: their styles, their recordings, their memorable moments - to strategies for promoting both label and studio, MAKING TRACKS: UNIQUE RECORDING STUDIO ENVIRONMENTS is packed with involving discussions.
