"For me, this book is a celebration of a recording style that I was beginning to think was dying out. Although home computers have made the recording of professional quality music available to all, the atmosphere, superlative equipment, and engineering expertise - combined with sheer dedication - of these facilities indicate how some of the greatest albums in Rock history were recorded. Perhaps more than recorded. It must be clear that there is some extra quality that can be added to the development as well as the execution of the music. I think it might be called magic." - Nick Mason, author and cofounder of Pink Floyd |
"This book captures the essence of all the places we work in and will appeal to anyone with an interest in music and recording. It covers many of the wonderful hidden places where recordings are made, combining just the right amount of technical information and crazy real-life stories about the recording world." - John Leckie, Producer (Radiohead, Muse, XTC) |

"Joe Meek always said to us, "When you sing, sing with a smile on your face." We thought it sounded stupid. \He had a pop shield, really tight, with a U47. He made my brother sing right up against it with a smile on his face. We noticed in those days that all the records were happy records in pop, weren't they? They weren't down sort of records or miserable. [Meek] was right because if you smile into a microphone, even if it was for no reason, your voice sounded better! We watched how he did things to a degree; he knew how to mic a drum kit up, things like that. It was mono in those days, there was no such thing as stereo...When I first met [Dave] Edmunds, we'd never heard a stereo record, neither of us. But Dave came up and we made a stereo record. We had a simple little mixing console, but it was enough to make a really good record. When Dave Edmunds and I played it back, we stood in a room, put the lights out, and with two speakers stuck up, the voice came out in the middle. We couldn't believe it [laughs]! We just stood in awe at this stereo record! - Kingsley Ward, Rockfield Studios |
