Weekend roundup

A freakishly hard solo, fun with beverage laws, becoming unpopular at church, a family member's heart attack, TV on strike, and a strip club convention all marked this weekend. How was yours?

We'll go chronologically-- I had to work Friday night, and Jenny stayed home by herself. Rented a movie, watched some TV, but was pretty much just plain B-O-R-E-D. And Saturday morning was more of the same, as I had a meeting at the church followed by a rehearsal for my Sunday morning solo. That's a lot of waiting. I'm sorry, hon!

The solo was pretty... and very, very hard. One of Sunday's readings was Psalm 84, so I chose to perform How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings, which we had in the church's music library. Chuck, our organist/music director/pianist, must be cursing me, because that was a freakishly hard song to play, let alone sing! But we did it, it was pretty, and we got many compliments yesterday morning.

Jenny & I did some consignment-store hopping on Saturday and finished the evening with dinner at MoMo's and wine at the new Wine Therapist bar/shop in Lakewood, where we hooked up with Pat . But the Wine Therapist doesn't have his liquor license yet... so instead of buying wine, we rented our glasses, and the wine was just, um, there. Now, THAT's a fun way around the license laws! I know it'll have to come to an end soon so the shop can actually, you know, make money. But it's a nice way to get us in the place in the meantime!

Sunday morning I performed my solo (twice) and ticked off several people in my Sunday School class. We wrapped up the ELCA's Sexuality Study -- where the church body is deciding whether to bless same-sex unions and/or ordain practicing homosexuals in committed relationships. It is, of course, not without controversy... and there's a pretty big division in the church, judging by yesterday's discussion. I'll write more about it probably tomorrow. (FYI, and I'll go into more detail later, I'm for the blessing & ordination, but some folks at my table are most decidedly not.)

Sunday evening, my dad called. He was in Brenham for the weekend, where his brothers and sisters all held their annual gathering. Dad's from a big family. He's one of eight kids, and a triplet. Around 5 p.m., my uncle Leroy had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. Dad says he's stabilized and is going home today. Heart disease runs in my family-- My dad's had two heart attacks, and a couple of his brothers have had them as well. So no surprise that on my 30th birthday, Jenny's cutting me off from all bacon and other artery-clogging foods.

Sunday night, we returned from dinner to find that TiVo hadn't recorded Desperate Housewives after all. We are absolutely hooked on this show, and we were dismayed to find that TiVo had watched an hour of an empty black screen... the satellite had gone out. Grr! So nobody tell us what happened, OK? We'll catch it on the repeat this Saturday.

And then I read in the paper this morning that the Texas strip club industry will hold its annual convention next month at the Dallas Convention Center. What could they possibly discuss? Are there voting delegates?
