A portrait of the blogger as an old man
So, um... ow.
As part of my New Year's resolution to
get back in shape, I went to my church's Tuesday night men's basketball group
last night. Our church has a gym, and a bunch of the 20-30-something guys
decided last year to put it to good
use.Since I've typically had to work
on Tuesday nights, I've not been able to join them. But I've heard stories of
the muscles pulled, the theological disputes settled and other things coming out
of these games. I was off last night, and Jenny had a meeting at the church, so
it was logical for me to join the game.
Let's just say that it's been a while
since I've played basketball. And I've never been particularly good at it. Sure,
I can grab rebounds, but that's about the extent of my talent. Shooting-- not my
strong suit. Defense-- leaves a lot to be desired. Plus, I'm not exactly in the
best shape of my life.Add to this that
since we had 10 guys there last night, we played full-court. Four games of
full-court basketball. First two games-- I was pretty gassed. Last two games-- I
started playing more defense, took a few pratfalls and got some good follow-up
shots. Overall, not bad for my rookie
debut. But boy, howdy, am I feeling it
today. My lower back is, um, hurting. I had trouble walking around last night,
and it takes me a while to get up from a seated position. And I'm walking
slowly. Jenny jokes that I'm acting
like an old man with arthritis. But she's quite supportive, even though she so
rudely left for work this morning, leaving me alone with the dog and my pain. ;)
Last night and this morning, I wore a BenGay
patch on my lower back. Speck, who usually curls up in my lap or next
to my leg, wants nothing to do with me. I think he hates the smell. And taking
him downstairs for his walk was quite amusing.
Alas, I shall play through the pain.
Or at least sit through the pain... at work, which is where I'm headed now.
