Christmas expressions

Since Jenny & I got married, we have no place to put the Christmas tree I had in my old place. It's just a 4 1/2-footer, and I'm not even sure we'll want it when we move to a house. Solution, at least temporarily: I took it to work! I set up the tree there last year and asked the rest of the department to decorate it. That was so much fun, we did it again this year. And this year, the decorations are, well, more interesting:

In other news, we got a Christmas card from our paper carrier. It was tucked inside the Sunday paper, which I just put away this morning! Anyway, it reads: "Wishing you all the joys of Christmas and a year filled with happiness. Happy Holidays, Paper Carrier" Yes, he/she actually signed it "Paper Carrier."

And another co-worker showed me a holiday letter she got from some friends. You know those annual updates some families write? This one was from a couple named Jan and Stan. And the top part reads something like this (This is from memory):

We had an exciting year, full of activity and no major catastrophes.
...
In January, we visited Stan's relatives in New Jersey.
In February, we took a trip to France.
In March, Jan went to visit her niece, whose husband has his leg amputated.
In April, we went to the Smokey Mountains
... and so on.

Um... someone had a leg amputated? And that's not a major catastrophe? Or a major issue, at least, worthy of another sentence or two?
